Southport Muto Aikido Club is the only Aikido club in the immediate area.
In Southport we practice the Iwama style of Aikido. This is the Aikido that was taught at the Iwama Dojo in Japan by the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba. This lineage was passed through Morihiro Saito who was given responsibility for the Iwama Dojo by Ueshiba. Saito Shihan toured the world teaching and giving demonstrations of Aikido.
Simon, the club’s instructor was taught his Aikido, formerly, by Shihan Ralph Reynolds of the Aikido Fellowship in Birmingham (Shihan Reynolds was one of the first people in the UK to learn Aikido at ’The Hut’ in Cambridge being taught by Kenshiro Abbe Sensei) and latterly, by Sensei Roger Tabberer, of the West Midlands Aikido Association, who studied as an uchi dechi (live-in student) with Saito Sensei. Shihan Reynolds has sadly passed away and Tabberrer Sensei has now retired from teaching Aikido.
Southport Muto Aikido Club is affiliated to the West Midlands Aikido Association, is part of the Aikido Research Federation (ARF) and is registered with the British Aikido Board (BAB).
A general Aikido course is being held on Saturday 18th May at the Waterloo dojo, 10.00 to 3.00. Bring your bokken and jo.
‘R’ Studios has to vacate the Shakespeare St premises by the 20th May. Classes are suspended from that date until somewhere is found.
