At Southport Aikido Club we practice the Iwama style of Aikido. This is the style that was taught at the Iwama Dojo in Japan by the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba known as O’Sensei.
This lineage can be traced through Morihiro Saito who was given responsibility for the Iwama Dojo by O’Sensei. Saito Shihan toured the world teaching and giving demonstrations of Aikido.
Simon, the club’s instructor was taught his Aikido, formerly, by Shihan Ralph Reynolds of the Aikido Fellowship in Birmingham (Shihan Reynolds was one of the first people in the UK to learn Aikido at ’The Hut’ in Cambridge being taught by Kenshiro Abbe Sensei) and latterly, by Sensei Roger Tabberer, of the West Midlands Aikido Association, who studied as an uchi dechi (live-in student) with Saito Sensei. Shihan Reynolds has sadly passed away and Tabberrer Sensei has now retired from teaching Aikido.
Southport Muto Aikido Club is affiliated to the West Midlands Aikido Association, is part of the Aikido Research Federation (ARF) and is registered with the British Aikido Board (BAB).
Our Aikido club is resuming on Sunday 13th October at the Team Elite dojo located behind the former ‘R’ Studio. Please see the Southport club page for further details.
