Why Aikido

Perhaps you're looking for something more.

Most people don't begin by searching for Aikido. They begin by searching for something they feel is missing from their lives.

Greater confidence. Better balance. A healthier challenge. A supportive community. A practical martial art with depth and purpose.

Whatever your reason, Aikido offers a lifelong journey of learning through regular practice.

How We Train

Train with purpose.

Everyone begins Aikido for different reasons.

Some people are looking for practical self-defence. Others want greater confidence, improved wellbeing, or simply the opportunity to study a traditional Japanese martial art.

Whatever brought you to the dojo, we believe your training should always reflect that purpose.

Every class develops the same fundamental principles, but each student is encouraged to explore them through the goals that matter most to them.

Progress comes through understanding, regular practice and thoughtful instruction—not simply repeating techniques.

Our dojo

About Southport Aikido.

At Zenreikan Southport we train in the classical Aikikai tradition as part of the North West Aikikai. As much as a martial art, Aikido is a holistic study: both the love of the art and deep friendships are built into the ethos of our practice.

Our approach

“A thousand days of training to develop, ten thousand days of training to polish. You must examine all this well.”

— Miyamoto Musashi

New to Aikido?

You don't need to be fit, flexible, or fearless.

The first level of progress includes a range of basic movements that can be learned relatively quickly. Early gradings bring new Aikidoka closer to the student group. After that, and with a little hard work, there is plenty of time to develop at your own pace.
