Aikido
A practice with many paths.
Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art that uses timing, control and balance to respond to force without simply meeting it with more force. The techniques use positioning and an attacker’s movement to create throws, pins and controls.
Because Aikido doesn't depend on strength alone, it can be practised by people of different ages, sizes and levels of fitness.
People don't always start out looking specifically for Aikido. The starting point may be a new physical challenge, practical self-defence, greater confidence or calm, friendship, or simply the desire to learn something new.
Whatever brings you to Aikido, the way you practise will reflect what you gain from it.
Explore Why AikidoHow We Train
Thoughtful practice. Lasting progress.
Good Aikido develops from sound foundations. We return regularly to kihon — the basics — developing posture, balance, position and movement while exploring the principles that connect different forms of Aikido practice.
As experience develops, practice becomes more varied, helping students not simply to reproduce techniques but to understand them and learn to adapt to what is actually happening.
