About the dojo

A small dojo committed to traditional Aikido.

Zenreikan Aikido Southport is part of the North West Aikikai, a small, independent group of Aikidoka committed to teaching traditional Aikido. All instructers have British Aikido Board coaching qualifications and insurance.

Our tradition

Rooted in the Aikikai tradition.

We practice in the Aikikai style and our classes reflect the tradition, etiquette and spirit passed down from the founder Morihei Ueshiba. New students are very warmly welcomed and are quickly integrated into the school. Visiting practitioners are always welcome on the mat.

How we train

Reigi first.

Reigi

It's not by chance that the first requirement on our grading syllabus is reigi: the etiquette we show inside the dojo, which also extends to our lives outside of it.

Patient practice

The first level of progress includes a range of basic movements that can be learned relatively quickly. After that, there is plenty of time to develop at your own pace.

A holistic study

As much as a martial art, Aikido is a holistic study. Both the love of the art and deep friendships are built into the ethos of our organisation.

“Progress comes to those who train and train; reliance on secret techniques will get you nowhere.”

— Morihei Ueshiba

Come and see for yourself.

The best introduction to what we do is to watch a class, or step onto the mat.
