I've never done a martial art. Can I really start?+
Yes. Many of our students started Aikido as adults with no background. New students are warmly welcomed and quickly integrated into the school. You'll be guided from your very first class.
Do I need to be fit or flexible?+
No. A reasonable level of general health is helpful, but Aikido itself develops your fitness, balance, and flexibility over time. Train at your own pace.
What should I wear to my first class?+
Loose, comfortable clothes: tracksuit pants and a long-sleeved t-shirt are ideal. We train barefoot on the mat. If you continue, you'll get a traditional white gi.
Is Aikido effective for self-defence?+
Aikido is, at its heart, a practice for resolving conflict without escalating it. The awareness, balance, and composure it develops are genuinely useful, but our focus is on long-term traditional study rather than short courses.
Can I just watch a class first?+
Absolutely. Many people prefer to come and watch before stepping on the mat. Get in touch so we know to expect you.
What about grading?+
We follow the UK Aikikai grading syllabus. Early gradings come relatively quickly and are a natural part of being brought into the student group; after that, students progress at their own pace.
